Instructions from the Airport to Villa Melenia

Agia ( Saint) Pelagia is a seaside Cretan Village ,amphitheatrically built ,on the north coast of Crete ,20km NW from the capital of Heraklion, with natural beauty, lovely surrounding beaches and mild climate. The sea is always calm as shielded by green rocks. T he name has been derived from a convent 1km west of the bay, where there is the church of Ag.(saint) Pelagia. You can enjoy the crystal clear water and other water sports as a wide range of water sport facilities for all age group sis offered at the central beach. There are a lot of tavernas and restaurants with traditional Cretan food and specialities, shops and S/M. If you want less crowded beaches you can visit Kladissos, Psaromoura or Mononaftis on the west or Lygaria and Made on the east of the bay. It’s a beautiful bay with fishing boats, green rocks rising  from the sea, with palm trees and flowers.In winter, when the beaches are empty, the weather is always good for walks on the beach, in the surrounding countryside or even swimming .

In the area of Kladissos there are ancient ruins of post Minoan tombs and ‘Pritanio’( the government building) of the 4th century B.C., recently into light (1970)On the left side of the central beach there is a cave called “evresis”(finding) where ,according to legend , local people found St. Pelagia’s icon. T he area is offered for excursions as well or visits to the picturesque villages of the main land at short distance; Knossos palace 25km on the east, Fodele, a tranquil village, the birth place of Dominikos Theotokopoulos ( El Greco ) 10 km west, Bali, a lovely fishing village,30km and the beautiful city of Rethymno, 50km west. The location is convenient as you can rent a car, a motorbike, use public transport or take a taxi.
